What is a novena?

A novena is an old Catholic tradition: nine days of prayer, often in the days before a feast. Each day you pray the opening prayers and that day’s card, asking a saint to pray with you and for you.

There is no wrong way to begin. If you miss a day, simply pick up where you left off.

A novena is not a formula or a guarantee. It is a way to keep turning to God, one quiet day at a time.

About the art and the words

Every painting is a public-domain work by artists such as Murillo, Guido Reni, Albrecht Altdorfer and James Tissot. Each one is shown whole and credited on its card.

The opening prayers are the traditional Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. Scripture verses are quoted from the Douay-Rheims Bible (1899 edition).

The daily prayers are new, written in plain words and drafted with the help of AI. These cards are a personal devotion, not an official Church text, and they do not carry an imprimatur.

Why we make these

Saint Dismas is honored as the patron of prisoners. Sales of these cards help support our work on Home On Purpose, a free guide to help for people leaving jail or prison in Florida.

If you are carrying something heavy

You don’t have to carry it alone. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, in English or Spanish. A priest, a deacon or your parish office is also a good place to start.
